Urologic Ultrasound Utilization, Consensus Statement on

The American Urological Association supports the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine Practice Guideline for the Performance of an Ultrasound Examination in the Practice of Urology [pdf] developed in collaboration with the AUA. This guideline includes specifications for individual examinations of the kidney and/or bladder, prostate and surrounding structure, scrotal, and penile; and equipment specifications for each ultrasound examination. Qualifications and responsibilities of personnel are outlined in the AIUM Official Statements Training Guidelines for Physicians Who Evaluate and Interpret Urologic Ultrasound Examinations [pdf] and Training Guidelines for the Performance of Ultrasound Examinations in the Practice of Urology [pdf]. Documentation, quality control and improvement, safety, infection control and patient education concerns should be addressed in accordance with the AIUM Standards and Guidelines for the Accreditation of Ultrasound Practices.
